Spiral Staircase Lamp

This operable lamp is a nostalgic tribute to the spiral staircase in my first apartment after college—a place that felt like it was straight out of a movie set. The staircase led to the second floor, and my boyfriend and I lined the space with bookshelves, so we could only reach certain books by climbing up the steps. The lamp captures that memory in a new form.

This was my first real personal project as a welder. The lamp features a column made from round tubing, steps cut from flat bar, and balusters fashioned from nails. The structure is mostly tacked together and spray-painted black, with wire forming the guardrail. The lampshade, made from handmade paper, adds a warm, inviting glow, turning this personal memory into a functional piece of art.
